Is there a chicken war brewing?

Wing Zone, a restaurant concept based in Atlanta, is set to open its first St. Louis location next month, just weeks after Raising Cane's debuted its first stand-along store in the area, located in Des Peres less than a half-mile from Chick-fil-A.

The Wing Zone restaurant will be located at 1643 S. Jefferson Ave., in a shopping center that was redeveloped by Green Street St. Louis for $8 million. (The Jefferson Commons shopping center is also home to a new Save-A-Lot, which opened last week.)

In an increasingly crowded chicken field, Wing Zone bills itself as a fast-casual, cook-to-order concept. Most of its business is takeout, but for customers who stay and eat, servers bring the food to their tables.

"People want the quality of a sit-down restaurant but want the value of a lower price," said CEO Matt Friedman, who co-founded the company as a college student.

The 10 new places in Abu Dhabi you have to eat at

Wing Zone were featured in an article on The National in an article titled, "The 10 new place in Abu Dhabi you have to eat at." The article describes 10 new restaurants that have opened in Abu Dhabi that are a must try. Read about the new Wing Zone location below or check out the full article here.

Wing Zone, Boutik Mall, Reem Island
This is not exactly the gourmet fare, and it might be a few weeks yet before their driver is on staff and they're able to deliver to hungry individuals across Abu Dhabi, but the opening of the US franchise of Wing Zone in the Boutik mall on Reem Island must be noted. It's not easy to find chicken wings, whether bone-in or boneless, that strike the perfect balance between crispy yet tender chicken and thick, sticky sauce, and Wing Zone has managed the difficult feat. They have over 12 flavors to choose from when it comes to dressing those wings, and the option to get your wings catered in platters of 100 or more. It's a different take on fast food fare: their burgers are fresh, juicy and always so delicious; their sides are varied and come with your choice of blue cheese or ranch dipping sauce and both salads and shrimp platters are on the menu. "McDonald's Goes Chicken Wings but Will Boneless Fly?"
By Laurie Kulikowski

Chicken wing lovers across America are either rejoicing or snubbing McDonald's new "Mighty Wings" offering this week whereby the fast-food giant will offer the meal at more than 14,000 nationwide locations. The roll out began this week and extending through the end of November.

Mighty Wings will be sold with so-called bone-in chicken wings either as a "drummette" or a "wingette". The wings are sold in three, five and 10 pieces starting at $2.99 and come with an assortment of nine sauces including Chipotle Barbeque Sauce, Creamy Ranch Sauce, Honey Mustard Sauce, among others, McDonald's says.

As wing-centric restaurants consider the chain's impact on their food costs -- especially if large bulk purchases by McDonald's limits overall supply thereby causing chicken wings prices to spike -- another scenario could emerge if the Oak Brook, Illinois-based company decides to continue the item for a longer period or even permanently: the mass adoption of the boneless wing.

"Forget Buffalo; Think Mango and Maple"
By Rick Allen

Next year, chicken wings will be 50 years old. Not that chickens didn't have wings before that, but it was in 1964 according to legend, when Teressa Bellisimo broiled a batch of wings destined for the next day's stock pot and created today's universal appetizer - Buffalo wings, named because her Anchor Bar was in Buffalo, N.Y.

In the ensuing half-century, wings have gone from the least-desirable piece of poultry to the most; on the wholesale market, wings typically are more expensive than any other piece of chicken except boneless and skinless breasts, especially around the Super Bowl - when we eat more than a billion wings, or roughly 100 million pounds, according to the National Chicken Council.

Nearly every restaurant regardless of its primary cuisine typically has wings - in recent years the "Buffalo" has been dropped. And their varied flavors always are the key.

Some places specialize in wings; among them, Wing Zone, which has its roots in Gainesville where a couple of University of Florida fraternity guys - Matt Friedman and Adam Scott - experimented with cooking wings in their house kitchen and sold the results to other students as a way to beat late-night munchies.

They called themselves "flavorholics," and their flavors are repeat winners at the National Buffalo Wing Festival in Buffalo.

A Wing Zone franchisee changed his cooking equipment to get better results. Army and Air Force foodservice provider The Exchange has been serving U.S. military families since 1895 with meals in cafeteria lines and snack bars. It wasn't until 1985, however, that it first signed a license agreement with a name-brand food franchisee - at the time, Burger King.

Today, The Exchange has experience with more than 40 brands, including chicken-wing chain Wing Zone. The company recently developed a method that serves Wing Zone's product faster and more efficiently, a process that rolled out to a Fort Lewis, Washington, base and helped make its seven units more profitable and streamlined.

franchising foreigners subway

At this year's franchise expo in New York City, Americans dreaming of opening up their own pizza shop or burger joint were often fourth in line behind Kuwaiti, Chinese or Peruvian executives.

Foreigners made up nearly a fifth of the attendees, and even small companies found themselves awash in attention. There's an insatiable appetite abroad for American franchises.

Take, for instance, the four Bolivian businessmen who crowded around the Wing Zone booth to make their case: Bolivia's ready for chicken wings, and Wing Zone is just the right American brand to bring back home.

With 60 or so locations in the United States, Wing Zone isn't exactly a big player when compared to, say, McDonald's. But international expansion, once reserved for only the largest brands, is gaining popularity for even the smallest franchises.

Densely populated Taiwan is one-fourth the size of the state of Georgia but has more than twice as many people.

A young population of 23 million in a democracy with a growing appetite for U.S. fast food has Atlanta-based franchisers looking to take cinnamon rolls, sandwiches and chicken wings to Taiwan.

Focus Brands Inc, and Wing Zone took part in a trade mission led by the Georgia Department of Economic Development in April, seizing the opportunity for a smooth introduction to a market they were already considering.

It's not as though either has had trouble expanding abroad. Focus Brands has opened Auntie Anne's pretzel shops all over Asia, two Moe's Southwest Grills in Russia, and even a Cinnabon store in war-torn Libya.

Still, the Georgia department set up meetings that made it easy for the company to connect with the right people in Taiwan. "For us, it's a really convenient and cost effective away to get face to face potential investors," said Scott Chorna, director of International new business development Focus Brands, who returned from the trip to his base in Los Angelos

It's a big thing, the chicken wing. Might as well pick the best beer

We know that beer and wings are quite the combination and we have found an interesting article on eatocracy.cnn.com title, "It's a big thing, the chicken wing. Might as well pick the best beer." The article breaks down the various types of wings and suggests the perfect beer to accompany each type of wings. You can check out the article here or begin reading below.

By Ray Isle

It's a big thing, the chicken wing. Might as well pick the best beer.

My secret theory about why chicken wings and football go so well together can be demonstrated by a very simple experiment. First, go to the store and buy a chicken. Next, remove its wings. Next, truss its little feet together. Now paint it brown. What does it look like? Exactly: a football. Chickens are footballs, except for the wings. And that’s why when we watch football, we eat chicken wings.
Some people might question the logic of the above theory, but they, of course, have not been drinking enough beer. Because that is the other thing that goes perfectly with chicken wings: beer, and enough of it...

"Healthy Surprise: Low-Calorie Menus Spur More Profits"
By Candy Sagon

"Healthy" doesn't sell, the restaurants chains said. Low-cal items always tank, the fast-food places whined. Well, guess what? Turns out "healthy" does sell.

A new study finds that fast-food and casual restaurant chains that offer lower-calorie options are seeing higher profits and more customers, while those that don't, aren't. Simple as that. Not only are Americans ordering fewer portions of french fries, the study shows, they're going for smaller main-dish portions and shunning sugary drinks.

The analysis of 21 chains - including McDonalds, Applebee's, Burger King, Cracker Barrel, IHOP, Panera Bread and KFC - between 2006 and 2011 found that lower-calorie food and drinks fueled the chains' growth, the Wall Street Journal reported...

Super Bowl fans cry 'fowl' over chicken wing shortage

We have found an interesting article on mnn.com (Mother Nature Network) titled, "Super Bowl fans cry 'fowl' over chicken wing shortage". The article discusses how the Super Bowl is the second -biggest eating day of the year and the volume of wings consumed. The article also examines the reasons behind the much discussed chicken-wing shortage. Although the article was written before the the Big Game, it still possesses some interesting and relate-able points. Click here for the entire article.

"Super Bowl fans cry 'fowl' over chicken wing shortage".
By Ned Smith

Americans are serious about their chicken wings, no more so than during the Super Bowl weekend, the second-biggest eating day of the year.

It doesn't take much to start a furor with foodies, no matter how retrograde their tastes may be. Last fall, it was the pork industry crying wolf about an anticipated shortage of ham and bacon because of feed crops decimated by drought. This year, it's the National Chicken Council taking Mother Nature and the federal government to task for a shortfall in the production of chicken wings that will hold consumption to 1.23 billion wing segments during the 2013 Super Bowl, 12.3 million less than last year.

It's not that our appetite for these zesty, protein-rich snacks has diminished. Quite the contrary, said Bill Roenigk, chief economist and market analyst at the National Chicken Council, a Washington, D.C.-based trade group.

Lighter Meals Appeal to Diners and Owners.
By Stephanie Storm

Driven by pressures like consumer demand and looming federal regulations that will require them to post calorie counts on menus, restaurant chains around the country are adding more nutritious choices and shrinking portion sizes.

The smaller portions, which are not necessarily cheaper, are in the first step toward reversing the practice of piling more food on a plate than anyone needs in a single meal, a trend that began nearly three decades ago.
