A turning point for POS

Wing Zone were recently featured in an article in Restaurant Business Magazine titled, "A turning point for POS." Apply Pay. Tap-and-Go. Paypal. EMV. In the ever-evolving world of payment, restaurants are being forced to reevaluate their POS systems and potentially spend large sums to upgrade with the times. While mobile pay gets a lot of press, the real driver behind the need to modernize is the October 2015 deadline to integrate chip-and-pin credit-card readers, in advance of an impending shift in fraud liability from card issuers to retailers and restaurants.

That's not to say that contactless payments aren't important. Operators admit, while the number of customers using e-wallets is low, it's still a consideration (and increasingly so) when looking at POS solutions. "You might lose business if you don't accept [a customer's] preferred payment," says Adam Scott, CFO and co-founder of Atlanta-based Wing Zone.

Making the Dean's List

Wing Zone were recently in QSR Magazine titled, "Making the Dean's List". The article focuses on how Wing Zone is expanding onto college campuses. Wing Zone CEO Matt Friedman provided great insight on the strategy behind this new kind of expansion and how the brand is positioned to roll out onto additional college campuses across the country. Click here to read the entire article.

Making the Dean's List
By Kevin Hardy

As with many nontraditional settings, college campuses have a lot of built-in advantages. There's a captive audience of busy, hungry students with disposable income. But getting a quick-service brand into the college environment isn't a sure thing. Competition is stiff, and college students are more discriminating than ever.

.....

While its roots in the college space, the 100-unit Wing Zone just opened its first college campus location this fall with a store near the dorms at Georgia Tech. The on-campus restaurant is open from 4.p.m. to 2.a.m. daily, hours that differ from the regular stores that cater to the lunch and dinner crowd. But by focusing on the dinner and late-night crowd, Wing Zone avoids conflicts with class schedules for student employees. And the location isn't competing directly with other on-campus dining options.

Starting a Restaurant? Head Back to School

Wing Zone were recently featured in an article on Web.com titled, "Starting a Restaurant? Head Back to School". The article, a new restaurant trend series on Web.com, focused on the trend of opening restaurants on college campuses to have built in business and employees. Wing Zone's CEO Matt Friedman talks about the advantages of being located on or near a college campus. You can read the article here or begin below.

"Starting a Restaurant? Head Back to School"
By Rieva Lesonsky

Thinking of starting a restaurant? College campuses are proving profitable for these three concepts.

Winging It

Millennials have changed their dining-out habits - and it's not good news for restaurant owners. According to a study by research group NPD, younger Millennials (ages 18 to 24) "made 27 fewer visits (per person) to restaurants between 2009 and 2012," though this has ticked up a bit in the last two years.

There are a few bright spots, however. The first is in the fast-casual sector, where fresh food and friendly services are attracting younger Millennials.

Another positive sign can be seen on college campuses. If you own a restaurant (or want to) you might think a campus location is the last place you'd want to be. After all, how much can students spend on food?

For Matt Friedman, the CEO of Wing Zone, who co-founded the chain in a fraternity house at the University of Florida, being located on or near a college campus is smart business. There are currently 14 "college" Wing Zones, with plans "to open at least 10 more within the next 18 months."

Wing Zones on campus (and the company's military locations) are, says Friedman, "the best performers within our system" with average ticket prices the same as non-college locations.

A 2011 National Restaurant Association survey found that 75 percent of American adults would be more likely to choose a restaurant that participates in a charitable program supporting U.S. military personnel, veterans and their families when dining out on Veterans Day, Nov, 11.

Many restaurateurs also like to show their gratitude toward the military in more direct ways. For years, Tim Horton's has given away donuts, while Olive Garden, Red Lobster, Hooter's and numerous other chains offered free meals or discounts to current and ex-military on Veterans Day. Many other brands offer 10 percent discounts to vets and active duty military all year round.

In addition, several restaurant companies are seeking to employ veterans and help them become franchisees. Recent NRA analysis U.S. Census Bureau data revealed that nearly 10 percent of the more than 880,000 thousand restaurants in the U.S. are at least 50-percent owned by military veterans, while nearly 38 percent of that are majority-owned.

In a globalized world, many quick-serve restaurants look to emerging markets in the Middle East, Asia, and other regions for new growth ventures. While these retailers strive to maintain the cornerstones of their brand, international menus can't be carbon copies of the American originals. Regional flavors, religious dietary restrictions, and different suppliers all play a part in shaping unique dishes for consumers abroad.

"There's a lot of research you have to do to really understand the market, the customs, the type of food people eat there, " says Danny Bendas, managing partner at Synergy Restaurant Consultants.

Some brands, like Atlanta-based Wing Zone, strive to keep the food and flavors as consistent as possible across the various locations.

"As much as we can, we want to have our main menu the same way that we have it here in the States," says Hair Parra, vice president of international development at Wing Zone. "The main reason we do that is because when people buy a franchise from the United States, they want to see the same thing they see in the States."...

Will There Be A Chicken Wing Shortage In 2014

We found this great article on kitchendaily.com titled, "Will There Be A Chicken Wing Shortage In 2014". Click here to read the entire article or begin below.

"Will There Be A Chicken Wing Shortage in 2014"
By Mike Lew

Last January, football fans and wing enthusiasts everywhere were brought to their knees by predictions of a chicken wing shortage directly ahead of the Super Bowl. Slate called it "The Great Chicken Wing Shortage of 2013." Although Time and US news pooh-poohed the crisis, Fox News fanned the flames of panic by demanding to know, "Who's to Blame for Nation's Chicken Wing Shortage?" Meanwhile, Stephen Colbert made fun of it and ESPN ran a surprisingly cogent analysis.

Was all of that hand-wringing worth it? Absolutely. Americans eat 1.23 billion wings on Super Bowl Sunday alone. Like wearing our lucky underwear, it's a sacred tradition that we go into Game Day getting our Buffalo on. With this year's Super Bowl on the horizon, Americans DEMAND to be kept abreast of the chicken wing situation.
